BOWLING.
OPENING OF GONVILLE GREEN. The Gonville club's green was opened for the 1917-18 season on Saturday, when there was a large attendance or members. Representative rinks from the sister clubs were also present. The president, Mr F. Symes, before declaring the green open, heartily welcomed the visiting bowlers, and also the ladies. He expressed the hope that members would have a good season. Referring to the green, he complimented the caretaker (Mr J. Mills) on its excellent condition, also referring to the very valable work done by the club's secretary (Mr H, A. Flower) not only in his official capacity, but also in assisting to have the green in applepie order for the opening day- He then called upon Mrs Symes to throw the "jack," which was neatly done, and the green was then declared open, A collection was taken up during the afternoon amongst members, ana the sum of £3 3s raised to be handed to the ladies in charge of "Gonville Day" at the Patriotic Red Cross Shop next Wednesday. A very enjoyable afternoon's play ensued, though the previous night's rain had made the green heavy, the games resulting:— Nioholls, Morgan, Bowling, Ogilvie, 17 v. Bailey, Redwood, Bromley, and „.'H. Bowater 17. Pratt, Fowler, Stewart, and Oreswell 19, v. Svenson, Allan, Pawson and Perrett, 13. Robertson, Ball, Harkness, Benefield 17. v. Hood, Hatherley, Williams, and Flower 21. Price, Tabart, Ridd, McMnrtrie 14 v. Cameron, Brown, Patterson, Copeland 19. Tilley, Smith, Bates, London 14, v. McKinnon, G. Brown, Arnold, McAneny 16. Saunders, Nettleship, Booth, Morshead 20, v. Scott, Firmin (jun.), Annstrong, Rice 16. Barkman, Mackie, Carrad, Benefield 17, v. Steel, Brown, Lawrie, Holloway 16. Wren, Thomson. Gilberd, C. Bowater 21. v. Irwin, McMurtrie (sen.), Jarrett, Martin 15. ST. JOHN'S CLUB'S OPENING DAT. The St. John's Club opened their »even courts on Saturday, when .they were favoured with good weather and a very large attendance of members and visitors from other clubs. The Mayoress (Mrs C. E. Mackay) declared the courts. The president (Mr G. W. McCaul) supplemented the remarks made by the Mayoress, congratulating the club on its big rr.ombership. lie also presented Mr M. L. Lampe, the retiring captain tnd secretary, with a travelling companion, subscribed by the members. Mr McCaul referred to t'..o great interest this gentleman has shpwn in the Club, being a rr.ost indefatigable worker. Mr Lampe, who was taken completely by surprise, responded with a very neat speech, thanking the members for their kindness in recognising his. services; which he looked upon as a labour of leve. Hearty cheers were given for the Mayoress. President, and Mr Lampe. During the afternoon a progressive tourney was played.- The prize for gentlemen, a racquet, given by Mr Lampe, was won by Master Allen Ru-ts. The ladies' prize, a writing companion, given by the club oaptnin •Mr W. G. Billows), was won by Miss ■/ones, who beat Miss Swan in the final, these ladier, having to play xff, each having won the same number of games. The above prices were presented by Mallows at the conclusion of the day's play. Afternoon tea was provided, undar the supervision of Mesdamea Bland, Bellows, Box, Lane, and Lampe. and the Misses Mor-is and Swan. The courts were in excellent condition, and the games were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
