TENNIS.
The St. John's club oepened their seven courts'on when they were favoured with good weather and a very large attendance of members and visitors trom other clubs. The Mayoress (Mrs C .E. Mackay) declared the courts open, and in a very nice little speech wished the club every success. The president (Mr G. W; Mo Caul) supplemented the remarks made by the Mayoress, congratulating the club on its big membership. He also presented the retiring captain and secretary (Mr M. L. Lampe) with a travelling companion, subscribed for by the members. Mr McCaul referred to the great interest this gentlejnan has shown in thfe club, being a most indefatigable worker. Mr Lampe, who was taken completely by surprise, responded in a very thanking.'* the members kindness in recognising idrWrvices, which he looked upon. -aVa labour of love. Hearty cheers were given for the Mayoress, president, and Mr Lampe. During the afternoon a progressive tourney was played. The pri»e for gentlemen, a racquet given by "Mr Lampe, was won by Master Allen Ruse. The ladies' prize, a companion given by the olub captain, Mr W. G. Billows, was won by Mies Jones, who beat Mrs, Swan in the final, these ladies having to play off, each having won the same number of games. The above prizes were presented by Mr Billows at the conclusion of the day's play.-,., Afternoon tea was provided -under the supervision of Mesdames Bland, Billows, Box, Lane, and Lampe and the Mioses. Swan and Morris. The courts were in excellent condition, and the games were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
