LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A fine of £5 was infllicted on a man in the Magistrate's Court this morning for stealing a tent and fly valqed at £JI 15s the property of the Wanganui Education Board. At the Magistrate's Court this morning Mr.J. G. L.. Hewitt, S.M., convicted and fined Henry Martis £1 for having driven a motor car in Victoria Avenue in a manner dangerous to the. public. A short sitting of the Wanganui Liensing Committee was held to-day, when, on the application of Mr Brodie, the temporary license issued to the Castlecliff Hotel was extended for four months. Two first offenders who had drunk too deeply of tho “cup that cheers” were punished in tb© Magistrate’s Court this afternooi by Mr Hewitt, S.M. One was convicted and discharged and the other fined: se. The Borough Inspector (Mr James Ogilvie) proceeded against Bardobes Spiro in the Magistrate’s Court to-day for having used water for garden purposes during the hours prohibited by the Waterworks By-Laws 1906. After hearing the evidence Mr J, G. L. Hewitt, S. M., convicted defendant and fined him Is. The gross takings at the patriotic concert organised by the Wanganui Caledonian Society and the military forces of the Wellington district were in the vicinity of >£6o, which amount included £4 7s 6d thrown on the stage in response to the singing of the “Silver Shilling” by Mr Frank Wilkie. In the course of his speech duriug the presentation of trophies, Lieut.-Colonel McDonald heartily thanked the ladies of the Red Cross Society, of which Mrs Gifford Moore is secretary, for their kiudly efforts in providing light refreshments each' day.
