AN OPEN LETTER.
Anonymous, Care of Alfred Burnett, Esq.
Dear Sir, —1 am instructed by the Committee to thank you for your generous contribution of JJoOO to the Patriotic Funds. The committee directs me to intimate to you that anonymous contribution i are not favoured; in fact. They are regarded as a'hindrance to our canvassing, rhey enable men who do not give at all to shelter themselves behind the shield of an-nytnous contributions. The com mittee is strongly of opinion that those who give should give openly, as an example and a lead to others, and indicating to men the extent of their duty. The committee hopes by pressure of public opinion to influence the hesitating and unwilling giver. Many men of wealth in this district have failed in their duty. Thecommittee is adopting that the public should know mitt t.iesc men have failed. Recruiting is impaired by the knowledge that men are asked to enlist, and, if need be, sacrifice their lives, whils". so mi men of wealth neither send theiv sons nor give of their substance in any adequate way. The public expects of me., that during the war they should give sul stantialiy from what they save and ad : . to their capital. I desire to indicate t > you that if anonymous contributions ai > encouraged, the committee will be baulk cd in its endeavours to make its appea 1 directly to the men who ought to giv substantially. It ha.s resolved that fo the future anonymous contributions wi.. not be acknowledged. I am directed t make a pressing request to you that, fc • the reasons I have given you you will allow your name to be disclosed.—Youi . faithfully, , LOUIS COHEN, Hon. Sec. Barometer Committee.
