Frank Demrsey, who rode Lavemlo to victory in tlio Caulfield Cup, hat: boon remarkably successful Vcf such a young horseman. Dempsey is Iti years of age, and can go to scale at little more than li stone. Ho is a most! unassuming lad, and is a son of Mr T. Dempsey, a wellknown Mentone trainer. Though he lias been riding in public only about 18 months, he has steeled no fewer than 28 winners, while he finished second in the A.J.C. Metropolitan recently on William the Silent, whom he beat into second olace on Saturday. Voting Dempsey rode his first winner at Albury. little over 12 months ago. He was successful on four occasions at the Caulfield meeting. He is a cool rider, and for so light a boy a vigorous finisher.

Dempsey said after the race that, he had a very comfortable ride, and Ills mount “won well.” He was always in a forward position, and had everythin;; settled inside the distance. Burrabadeen appeared to have interfered with Lavendo when ho crossed the held early in the race, but Dempsey stated in reply to the stipendiary stewards that the favourite had not touched his mount. Shortly after he started to appear in the saddle in public, Dempsey’s ridinsr was not pleasing to the stipendiaries, but since then he has greatly improved, and is now' one of tbe best, if not actually the best, of the Victorian lightweights.

The extra totalizator tax on dividends comes into force on November 1, so that tho Auckland Bacing Club will be the first club to put it into operation. There is every probability of Chfrtle being sent north after the 'Wellington meeting to compete at Eller.die on the opening day of the A.R.C. Spring Meeting', and then be returned South to take part in the Stead Memorial Gold Cup at Riccarton.
