The Journal’s Athens correspondent reports that a furious battle, the bloodiest and most serious of all that have been fought In the Balkans during the last three years, is now in progress, near Veles. The Austro-Oerman defeat in North Servia has now forced King Ferdinand to strike a heavy blow in the south. Mackensen has, for the time being, given up the idea of joining up his armies in the Timok Valley, and has picked the Bulgarians for attempting a surprise attack on the Ishtib-Veles sector in the south. The success of this plan will mean the isolation of the Servian army, but its failure will spell the collapse of the concerted’German-Bulgarlan plans. The Bulgarian ammunition is running short. AUSTRO-GERMANS NOW ON DEFENSIVE. WAITING FOR REINFORCEMENTS. Received October 25, 9.25 a.m. PARIS, October 24. The Petit Parislen's Athens correspondent says the Servian success in the north is confirmed. The Austro-Germaus are unable to junction with the Bulgarians, and have assumed the defensive, pending the arrival of reinforcements. RUSSIANS BOMBARDING BULGARIAN PORTS. Received Cache;- 25, 9.25 a.m. PARIS, October 24. Le Matin’s Athens correspondent reports that the Russians are bombarding Varna and Burgas. Received October 25, 12 noon. LONDON, October 24. A French communique confirms the bombardment of Varna and Burgas. UP AGAINST IT. GERMANS ADMIT SERVIAN SUCCESS.
