WAR PROFIT-MONGERS.
GERMANY ALSO SUFFERING. THE PEOPLE EXASPERATED. AMSTERDAM, October 23. The Cologne Gazette, in a significant article, rails bitterly against the war usurers, who see in the present economic conditions a wonderful opportunity of money-making. It declares that there is exasperation among the people because the task oi holding out in the long war is thus rendered so difficult. It describes wai usury as the unsightly stain on' Germany's “white shield of honour,” and contends that, although the people arc conscious of victory,and display utmost self-sacrifice and efiduranCTi the tension produced. in the fade of these large war profits is so great.that a safety valve must be opened. The paper concludes by predicting that, if the farmers continue to hold back food, the Government will proceed to a general seizure of stocks. GOVERNMENT TAKES DRASTIC ACTION. LONDON, October 23. Berlin Announces that the Uernin Federal Government will assume coutj >1 of ail foodstuffs throughout Germany.
