Our excellent trenches were blown ’nto holes ami the entanglements shredded. Tlie gas banks crept towards us in successive waves Suddenly, behind the fourth cloud, (he British emerged in thick lines. The storming columns seemed to arise from tho earth. They wore masks, resembling devils, not soldiers. Tor a long time thereafter no news was received from the divisional headquarters, the wires being destroyed. An adjoining division reported a gas attack, and that their first line had been stormed. Finally tlie news was received that the British had succeeded in storming our division's first trendies.
