BRANDING WHEY BUTTER.
A MINISTERIAL EXPLANATION
1 (By Telegraph.—Special to "Herald.”) | WELLINGTON, September 1. j The Minister of Agriculture made a *■ further, explanation in the House .this 1 afternoon, about the branding of whey L butter. Mr Mac Donald pointed out that ! when ho spoke the previous day he was j not aware that the matter had already i been definitely settled, so far as the send- • ing of circulars to daily factories, stating I that whey butter would in future have j to be branded as such, was concerned. He went on to say that, about three years ago, when the different cheese factories began to manufacture whey butter, they were allowed to brand it as factory butter, on the condition that a good standard was maintained. That part of the contract had not been fulfilled. The Department, therefore, deemed it to be essential that whey butter should have a separate brand. The whole export of whey butter last year was 242 tons., as against 19,975 tons of factory, creamery, and milled butter. Whey butter, therefore. only represented 1.2 per cent, of the whole output of butter in this country. Dairy factories in the Manawatu and in the Auckland district had agreed to leave the question of branding blitter entirely in-the hands of the Department, and the I result was that now all dairy companies had been circularised to the. effect that, in future, aTf whey butter would have to be branded as such. ... In answer to Air Anderson, tho^ Minister stated that the requirement did net apply to butter, sold iu New r Zealand, as it was ouly necessary to brand butter for export.
