THE N.Z. PROFESSIONAL CHAMPION SHIP. BP “VICTOR.." $ -It is rather anmsipg to be told that P. Hannan is to challenge W. Fog well I lor the title of New Zealand champion, i The latter is supposed to have won the I title by beating ti. Whelch at Akaroa, but Whelch was never professional champion of New Zealand, and it is, therefore, hard . to understand how Fogwell lias any right to the championship of the Dominion. At the time Whelch and Fogwell raced, there were a couple of other New Zealanders— Dick Arnst and IV. Webb—who could have beaten either Whelch or Fogwell easily. Arnst was at the time champion of the world, and as such, perhaps, could not claim the New Zealand championship, but Webb certainly had a right to be consulted by those who took it upon themselves to declare the Whelch-Fogweil race a contest for the New Zealand championship. However, if Hannan and Fogwell do meet in a race for any honours the latter is alleged to hold so far as the New Zealand championship is concerned, the contest would here to take place in New Zealand, and would probably lead to other matches here. There is no reason why Webb should not be able to get fit enough to heat either Fogwell or Hannan, and it is more than likely that the Wanganui man would meet the winner, provided he could spare the time to train for such a match.
