MR. COOK REFUSES TO SEND PETITIONS. kYD,N KY, February 16. The Hon, J. Cook refused to send the Right Hon. Lewis' Harequrt a number of petitions from industrial Unions asking the Imperial Government to restrain South Africa from carrying out the deportation of the strike leaders.
MR. FISHERS VIEWS. MELBOURNE. February 16. Mr Fisher said he hoped the time would never come when Australia would deport men without trial. He agreed with Mr Harcourt that whatever Dominion was the offender, it was not for the Mother Country to interfere.
UMCENI CALLS AT LAS PALMAS. INTERVIEW WITH LEADERS. Received February 17, 12.10. p.m. LONDON, February 16. The steamer Umgeni called at Las Palmas for provisions. Nobody was allowed to embark or disembark. The deported Labourites, interviewed from a launch, said then intended to insist on landing, but afterwards decided not to in order not to compromise the captain and officers, who had treated them with kindness. Bajn declined to make a statement ’pending consultation with tho English leaders. He admitted that the leonrtment was not altogether a surprise.
STATEMENT BY MR. McKENNA. Received February 17, 11.35 a.m. LONDON, February 16. The Right Hon. R. McKenna announced that the Government had no power to prevent the deported South African Labour leaders from landing. Waterston, who is an Australian, and Poutsma. who is a naturalised Britisher, could be prevented as aliens.
