CANCER AND RADIUM.
MORE REMARKABLE IMPROVEMENTS.. When a scries -of. most remarkable im- : provomeuts in advanced cancer eases treated by radium at the Middlesex Hos- , pital was reported last September polite scepticism was expressed by many surgeons as to tlie part radium had played in bringing ijbout . these “apparent cures.” The statement of Dr. Lazanis-Barlow, ; the director of the Middlesex cancer ro--1 search laboratories, in the London' Times that out of 68 inoperable cases admitted ‘from June to September last 32 bad been , able to leave the hospital greatly imj proved, must go far. to do away with this I scepticism. No actual cures are claimed | among these 32 patients.
“All I will say,” Dr. -Lazariis-HaiTow said, “is that in the corresponding period of 1912 all the inoperable cases admitted , died', 'a death rate of 100 per cent. In the same period of 1913 almost half of the patients regained after treatment such a favourable- state of health as to allow. of their being discharged from the hospital. Many- of these patients are now goin gabout their daily work.”
; The greatly improved results obtained since Juno .1913 Dr. Lnaarus-Barlow attributed largely to the greater amount of radium used on each"'patient. We have proved that to got good results a much larger bulk of radium is required than was 'formerly thought necessary.”
