ALLEGED MURDER.
SEQUEL TO NIGHT ASHORE. (Ter United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February U. An altercation between some waterside workers and a number of men from the steamer Makariui was responsible for the death of Harry Gallagher, a trimmer, of that vessel, through being felled by a blow last night. It appears that the men from the steamer were having a night ashore and went to the Wellington Hotel. Here they met some men from the water-front. Trouble arose, and an objectionable word was made use of. Gallagher, it is said, demanded an explanation from the man using the language. At this stage the barman interfered, and sent the men outside. There, it is alleged, a man ‘ named John Albert Tucker ' struck' Gallagher on the jaw, knocking him down, Gallagher striking his head heavily on the ground. As he did not make any attempt to rise it was perceived that the man was seriously, injured. Dr. Henry was sent for, and when he arrived a few minutes latef he pronouncedlife extiuct. The body was removed to the morgue, where am inquest will be held. It is understood that. Gallagher was. a married man, and has a large family' living in Kngland. Tucker was arrested, and will bo charged at the Magistrate’s Court tb-morrow with the murder of the deceased.
TUCKER REMANDED. AUCKLAND, February 16. John Alfred Tucker was charm'd at the Magistrates Court with murdering Harry Gallagher, a trimmer on the Makarini,-and was remanded till Wednesday. Tlie charge, is the outcome of a brawl outside a local hotel, when it is alleged Tucker knocked Gallagher down.
