Piebendary Carlisle, head of the Church Army's prison gate work, was going to Buckingham Palace, when, he was stopped •at the gates by an ex-pickpocket (now reclaimed) who asked Prebendary Carlisle to show- the King a Post Office bank-book containing £l2B. The King heartily commended the work of the Army, saying—“l feel the greatest sympathy for those who have made‘a slip in life and are now, without means or characters, working their way back to good citizenship.”
