In reply to the surprise expressed by Sir James Mills at “the precipitate action of tho engineers”, the local secretary, -Mr Wallace, explained tlio position thus, tho result of the ballot was known lo tho executive of tlio Marino Engineers' Institute on Friday night. He (Mr Wallace) communicated with Mr Kennedy (local manager of the Union Co.) on Sat : urday morning, made known to him tho resuit of tho ballot, and asked him to communicate with tho headquarters of tho Union Co. at Dunedin. "Tho company,'' said Mr Wallace, “did not offer any inducement to come to terms. I suggested 1 that Mr Kennedy should ask for power to conduct negotiations hero, but there was no definite'result, and eventually the whole thing was hold over until Monday. On Monday I aguijj communicated with. Mr Kennedy, aud at my suggestion he again communicated witn Dunedin, and 1 suppose again put our case before his' company iio wanted to know what.he should say. I told him- that tho menwanted the Australian award, and ihat if lie declined to., give, any, guarantee to agree to these terms. ' 1 would then be in a position to advise tbc engineers as' to their, next course of action.
