HAYWARD’S PICTURES. The splendid programme of animated pictures forming the last series attracted a verv large audience to the Lyceum last evening, the popular picture resort being taxed to its utmost. COMPLETE CHANGE TO-NIGHT. This evening at the Lyceum there will bo presented another complete change u pictures. The programme is said to equal any of its predecessors, and contains some stirring dramatic studies, as well as some splendid scenic and comeat studies. The Lyceum Orchestra wih render another new programme ot incidental music. Intending patrons are advised to go early, as another big house is anticipated.

PRINCE'S lUNK DRILL HALL. To-night will see the official opening of the above rink at the Drill Hall by his M orehip the Mavor, Mr C. E. Mackay, and the manager M'r A. Gonard, hoe assured us that no 'effort has been spared to ensure the comfort of patrons. It is intended to keep the rink select—a step m the right direction, which will, no doubt, meet with its due reward. Miss Ata Millington, who mat with such success at the recent carnival, will again appear, as also will Miss B. Houghton, her understudy. They wi.l, in com-anv with thei rteacher, give an exhibition in the art of fancy skating m which will again be included the ice. Waltz," now all the rage on the Continent and in Australia. Both young ladies will then take .part in a tandem race for a gold medal presented by the management. Thpre will also be a hockey match on skates. A shipment of the best and latest Phillips’ skates is to hand, and will be on hire. The floor is new and of heart of matai. The rmk will be open this morning and afternoon for the to;, veniencfl of beginners.

PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL. The Aramoho Lodge or Druids is holding a plain and fancy dress ball in the Ino Brigade Hall on Friday evening nest, Jnl.t 14th, and the cou mittee are sparine no elforta or expense to make it one of t.*V most popular functions of the year. An efficient orchestra has been engaged, under t.ie leadership of Mrs Lockett, while the c.uering has been left in the capable bauds .of Dustin’s, Ltd., who are providing a really high-class supper. The duties oi M's.C. will be carried out by Bros. 0. Hansen, 0. Poynter, and-J. Logan. An advertisement appears elsewhere in this issue, in which the committee term their function the “biggest, brightest, and best of the season,” and they are undoubtedly .dejing their best to realise their ambitipa, the requirements of their patrons being catered for in every possible way. FANCY DBESS SKATING CABNIYAL. The eagerly-anticipated fancy dress skating carnival, promoted by Mr G, Prime, the proprietor of the Boyal Emk, took place in the Drill Hall on Thursday evening, and must he written down xs a great success. The many gay costumes, together with the excellent selections of the band, combined to make a thoroughly enjoyable evening, while the new iloor came in for a considerable amount of favourable comment. During the evening, Mr Gonard and his pupil, Miss Ata Millington, gave an exhibition of fancy skating, which demonstrated the possibilities of the rollers when interpreted by experts. The dainty evolutions of the young lady were generally admired. An innovation was the tandem race on skates between Messrs Cross and Verpilot, driven by Misses Millington and Boughton respectively. A moat exciting struggle resulted in a win for the former by inches. The hockey match, which was strenuously contested throughout, created a great deal of amusement. The prizes, which were presented by the Mayor (Mr C. E. Mackay), went to the following:—Most originally dressed lady, Mite E. Houghton; best dressed lady, Miss Cannons, Spanish girl; best dressed gentleman, Mr Reynolds; moat comical costume, Mr Langridge (’’Catch of the Seaion”) ; moat graceful couple, Miss I’udnoy and Mr Verpilot.

CONCERT AND DANCE AT AVANGAEHU. A very enjoyable concert and dance, in aid of the local tennis club, was held on Thursday night in the Wangaehu Hall. The night was a ]<rfect one for dancing, and. as usual at all concerts or dances given in this sociable village every one ■was made very welcome. Mr E. E.’ Fletcher (chairman of the school committee) presided, and was ably assisted bv Air. Bam AAoou. A drag left AVindlcbuvn's stables shortly before 7 o'clock, arriving at the hall before the concert started. The programme was in the hands of Miss Barnes, this young lady accompanying throughout. Several choruses were given by the company, and vocal items were rendered by Miss Todd, Messrs T. Hiroti, H. Earatau, J. Toki, J. Edwards, and a deet by Mrs Karatau, and Simon. “A Scene from the Past,” a description of the Maori haka by Apirana T. Ngata, was splendidly recited by H. Hiroti, introducing the Maori Hui‘ assembly of the tribee, the maidens' welcome, and then the haka. An impromptu song introducing local names was loudly applauded, as was this singer’s rendering of “Every Race has a Flag but the Coon.” Supper was provided by the ladies, and thorouohly enjoyed. The music for the dance was supplied by Mies C. Neilson, several extras being played by Miss Barnes and others present. Town was reached in the very early hours of the iporning, all havin'* had a good time ‘ ”

GARRISON BAND’S RECITAL

A final reminder is given of the recital io be given by the Garrison Band in the Opera House to-morrow night. As will be seen from the programme in another column, every item has been carefully selected, and under Conductor t\ ade's able direction the recital promises to equal any yet given hy the band.

FULLERS’ PICTURES

The Opera House will again be occupied by Fuller’s Pictures on Monday evening next, when the firm will present another fine programme of cinematograph gems, including tome stirring dramatic, scenic, and comedy studies, which should attract a large attendance of the public. O’Hara’s Symphony Orchestra will supply the incidental music.
