MISHAP TO ONE OF THE BOILERS.
The Passengers Alarmed.
(Per United Press Association!. WELLINGTON, July 5. f He Tongariro brought 259 passengers. 1 of whom 228 were third-class. There were 45 assisteds—32 adults and 13 children. Nine wives joining their husbands and 18 domestics are included in the list. A mishap occurred to one of the boilers of the Tongariro during the passage from London. At 10.30 p.m., when about nine days from Hobart, the top of the combustion chamber of one of the five boilers gave way, owing to a weak plate. The accident was accompanied by a slight report, and a volume of steam "issued from the stokehold grating. The electric light was cut off, and some uneasiness was expressed among the passengers. After a stop of two hours the vessel resumed her voyage, using four boilers. The Tongariro, although she had one boiler out of use, averaged 275 miles per day, and was not appreciably delayed. While at Hobart a drunken seaman harangued the third-class passengers, making startling statements, which tended to alarm the passengers. He was looked up, and the next dav apologised.
