RETIREMENT OF MR. F. A. KRULL SERVICES RECOGNISED BY GERMAN GOVERNMENT. It is 50 years ago to-day (3rd July) since our old and highly-esteemed fellow townsman, Mr. F. A. Krull, was appointed Consul in New Zealand for tho Hanseatic town of Hamburg. On 6th May, 1868, he was appointed Consul for the North German Confederation, and on the 25th August, 1871, His Imperial Majesty, the, then German Empcfov, nominated him ■ his Consul for the Empire, When Mr. Krull was first appointed there was in New Zealand only one foreign Consul, that for Prussia, whieli was represented by the late Sir (then Mr.) Francis Dillon Bell, who resided in Auckland. At tho present time there are 77 Consular representatives in Now Zealand of the different foreign nations. Mr. Krull lias now sent in his resignation, and hopes that his Imperial Majesty will accept it. Previously (on 2-lth November, 1898) he had asked to bo relieved of bis duties, but lie was requested to withdraw his letter and continue bis elections. Sir. The German Government lias recognised his long services by granting him the Order of the Crown and also the Order of the Red Eagle, and this morning Mr. Krull received a letter that his Imperial German Majesty had granted him a higher Order of the Crown with the number 50. This high order is limited to an issue of fifty.

The foreign Consuls of Wellington and other plaees have all sent congratulatory telegrams as also Sir James Carroll on behalf of the Government, and Herald readers will heartily join in the congratulations, which on their behalf, we tender to Air.
