Diree seamen were asphyxiated on the battleship Superb, owing to an explosion of coal gas in the bunkers. Lord Rosebery opened the Thackeray Centenary Exhibition at the Chapter House with a brilliant analysis of the novelist's genius. Dio barque Claudina, which has arrived from Callao, reports having sighted wreckage, consisting of a mast and spars of a vessel of about 700 tons in the vicinity of Lord Howe Island. A quantity of floating timber was recently sighted.
