It is, of coarse, unsatisfactory to the owners, j hot the problem of always providing ! labour for the ships is not so easy of solni tion. There is not sufficient work on the ; Wanganui wharf to kgep all the men regularly employed who would be required when there was a “rash" on, occasioned by the arrival of several steamers at the same time, and the men irregularly employed naturally seek work elsewhere. The average earnings of the waterside workers /are very small, the greater number of 'then not earning nearly sufficient on the wharf to maintain themselves and their families.
