He gives a vivid description of the recent" eruption at the island of Taal.: The explosion was heard at a distance of 250 miles, and was followed by a tida,l wave, which swept six miles inland, the inhabitants. being exterminated, the only living thing'found being a monkey. All the, bodies have been recovered, about 1500 being . completely naked. The seismic wave travelled to the town of Lemery, the country around subsiding to a depth of six feet.
