COMMONWEALTH BANKS.

Press Association.—Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, January 18. The Financial News states that on the whole the Australian banking position is remarkably sound. There is no indication in the statistics of inflation of value or over-speculation. The establishment .of the Commonwealth Bank must somewhat interfere with the functions'of the existing banks, and possibly cause some temporary limitation of their profit-earning capacity; but Australia must enormously increase in wealth-earning activities, and the banking business increase will be parpassii. There is no reason to predict any permanent’ falling-off . either in" the stability of Australian banks or their profit-cai-uing powers.
