WANGANUI EAST BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui'East BoroUgh Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Jones), and Crs. A. Burton, J. O’Leary, F. H. Allen, H. Christie, G. McCaul .and A. Benefield. FOREMAN’S REPORT.—’The foreman’s report on the .roads and tiie work done during the month was read and adopted. FINANCE.—The bank book showed a dr balance of £462 12s Bd. The amount collected during the month was .£748 15s 7d. LEASE.—A formal deed re lease was received from the Railway Department- for execution, which was authorised. INFECTIOUS DISEASES—The Chief Health Officer forwarded a memo re the control of infectious diseases. SUBSIDY.—The Valuation Department notified the payment of, the subsidy on the rates. FROMONT ROADS.—Plans of the Fromout roads were received from Mr A. O. Muir for dedication. The Council agreed to the dedication. RECREATION GROUND—The use of the Recreation Ground was granted for a. church picnic on January 23rd. DOG TAX.—The tax is to be the same a« in previous years. The Mayor and clerk were authorised to accept lenders for tho supply of dog collars. RIVER BANK ROAD.—Crs. McCaul, Burton, O’Leary, and Christie were appointed a committee to go further into the question of opening up the road skirting the road opposite Allen’s and Paul’s estate. OKEHU WATER.— I The Mayor and Cr. McCaul were appointed a committee to wait upon the District Engineer with, a view to having an 8-inch pipe instead of a 6-inch' pine laid across tho Aramoho Bridge. LOAN PROPOSAL.-Cr. Benefield gave notice to move at the next meeting that the Council raise a loan of £IO,OOO to give effect to cx-Cr. Neilson’s proposals to lay a complete drainage and sewage system: the metalling of all unmotalled roads within the borough; the connection of Maketu 'and Poutiui Streets with Mackay Street, and the laying down of a level crossing opposite Poutiui Street. The rate to secure the loan will come to about sd. The poll will he taken at the same time as the bridge loan poll. DUNCAN ESTATE ROADS.—A deputation waited on the Council and protested against tile most unsatisfactory state of the roads on Duncan Estate. The roads wore originally formed by the Mataonga«>nga Road Board, and accepted by the Council on its formation. —The Mayor explained that the "work would have-to bo done out of loan money, and after discussion, it being agreed that the work was imperative, it wag decided to include the amount of the formation and metalling of tlie roads in tho bridge loan poll. BEAUTIFYING .-Cr. Willis mentioned that in the Nixon estate, which has just been slab-divided and roaded, there are some splendid trees which stand on the road lines, and which the contractors, iu order to fulfil their contract, will have to oiit away. There is a beautiful walnut tree, 50 or 60 years old, a- chestnut tree and a willow tree. These would be a distinct improvement to the streets if left.— The Mayor and Cr. Willis were empowered to authorise the saving of the trees. ' AMALGAMATION—In pursuance of notice, Cr. Hill moved-that a committee consisting of Crs. McCaul, Christie, and Burton be appointed to go into the question of joining* the Wanganui borough.—After short discussion, the motion was carried.
