BY “ACHILLES.” A new aspirant for hurdlo honours is Wiinmera, and critics who have seen Mr. Watt’s igelding being schooled over the obstacles prophesy that .ho will make a worthy addition • to the jumping brigade. The Merriwee mare, Merriwing, by Mr. Watt’s old favourite Merriwee, from Fleetwing, has been getting through some satisfactory tasks on the Hastings tracks re;ently, and turf critics are selecting this promising mare to land a stake before -ie autumn fixtures are ntuch lurther advanced. The Australian mile and a half record of 2.32£, which stood to the credit of the New Zealanders Noctuiform and Maniapoto, has been lowered to 2.32J, by Marlee, a five-year-old chestnut gelding by the Auckland-bred True Blue—lmportance. The Manawatu Stakes has left the question of the two-year-old “championship” still very open. In the race Danube ran very wide at the turn into the straight, and there can be not little doubt that he would at least have pushed Polymorphus if he had kept on the rails. As to the case for the two-year-olds, Danube has beaten Formby by three times, and been beaten by him once, and he has beaten Madam Madcap more often than she has beaten him. In the Middlepark Plate, in February, and again the Challenge Stakes at Easter, the filly certainly looked like a champion, and gave the- Martian—Neva colt no.chance, but Danube has some high-class performances to his credit, and it would be difficult to say that either is superior. Formby, of course, has won the most money. It is quite probable that Bobrikoff will bo taken to Sydney again in the spring for some of the big events at the A.J.C. meeting.
