SCULLING.

ARNST V

WHELCH

THE CHAMPION TRAINING.

(Per United Press Awuciati«n.)

NELSON, December 9,

R. Arnst, the champion sculler, is putting in some holid work on the Nelson Harbour in preparing- for hi» race against ueorge "VVUelcli at AKaroa. He speaKe m high terms of the local conditions for rowing purposes. A large stretch of water is available, which provider a good rowing course, with a chance of obtaining both rough and smooth water. This gives oarsmen an opportunity to become skilled in all branches.

THE WANGANUI HANDICAP

BY "VICTOR."

Jack Mitchell and his trainer, Zeitsch, arrived in Wanganui on Tues3ay, and Mitchell had a row yesterday on the river. Jack should be in much better form here than he was at Foxton, where he had to row in a strange boat, one kindly lent him by Larsen. He says the Wanganui River is a grand sheet of water, and all of the Australians should be able to get into tip-top condition by the date of the big handicap here — the 6th and Bth January. He was very favourably impressed with the two town sheds and the plants, and considers that Wanganui should certainly turn out some splendid oarsmen with such unrivalled advantages.

F. S. Hagney, A. D. Felton, S. Kemp R. Green, E. Larsen, J. Ellis, and Te Rewhiti arrived from Foxton by thi.afternoon's train^ and will nrobably all be afloat to-morrow, &o that {ne river will present a very busy scene of an after noon with the visiting scullers, and the various local amateur crews training. It is probable that Te Rewhiti (Li: Davis), who is an old Wanganui boy will be allowed to start in the handicap here. Ho had such very bad luck at Foxton in capsizing, and not being abk to start, that all the scullers and othei enthusiasts are anxious to see him giver, a chance to show what he can do, espec ially as he has agreed to accept 25sec the limit provided for) start.

Where is Arnst? This is a question often asked of late (says the Sydney Mail of November 24). Well, it is known he is stili in New Zealand, and that recently he war talking of getting up a handicap at Auckland. That evidently has come to nothing. Arnst did not enter for the Foxton handicap, and there is no certainty he will foi the Wanganui fixture, though he has beei invited to do so. Can it be a question of appearance money 3 He seems to hav< i very high opinion of his worth as ar ittraction, and no doubt to a certain extent he is justified. Wp learned some few montho ago that he wanted .£IOOO for expenses if he rowed outsido New Zealand This is about ten times more than he car reasonably expect. He is not likely to gel a match with Whelch unless he agrees tr the terms he has been offered. Arnst if regarded as a very fine sculler, but it if not a boom time in sculling any where Were it so, why should he ask more thaisuch men as Beach. Searle, Stanbiiry, am others of the champions & Who are thej who would seriously consider the term? asked for? Not Barry, nor any one here.
