LONDON, April 23
Advices from Salonika state that Shevket has proceeded to the front, where he will direct the investment operations. It is rumoured that the Sultan is preparing a resistance. , Messages from Vienna announce that the national assembly of Senators and 120 Deputies now at San Stefano discussed two motions, the first providing for the Sultan's deposition, and the second declaring the march of the Macedonian army as legal, and those resisting it as rebels. While Mukhtar was speaking against the dethronement, five warships, without Admiral Gamble, appeared and placed themselves at the Assembly's disposal. Among the factors influencing the feeling of the Assembly in favour of dethronement was the belief that the deposition was already decided on qn principle, and that the Sheik ul Islam assented thereto.
The Assembly, which gradually increased in numbers to 200, postponed its decision regarding the dethronement, but adopted the second motion.
Their deliberation is resuming to-day. The ships started before the fixed time without Admiral Gamble, as they desired to hasten to join the Constitutionalists. Shevket, as defender of the rights of all Ottomans, assumed the direction of the negotiations with the Government.
