The jobbing and printing departments of the Taranaki Herald were destroyed by fiz-o a.fc on& o*cloclc tlxzs xnorning. The literary and linotype departments escaped, being in a brick building with steel eh utters over the windows and doors.

It is impossible to estimate the damage at present. The buildings, insured 'for .£650, are a total loss. The machinery and plant were insured for .£1750, but it is feared the damage to them is irreparable. Both insurances are in the New Zealand Company.

The origin of the fire is a mystery. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The building was left, apparently safe, at 11.20 p.m. by the publishers of the weekly paper. A slight outbreak occurred early on Wednesday morning in the same building, when the office's patent alarm brought the brigade before the fire had any hold. Last night the alarm system had not been re-in-stated, owing to the difficulty of obtaining thermostats.

The paper will be published as usual.
