Personal Notes concerning New Members.
DUNEDIN, November 18. Mr E. J. Anderson, who has been successful in obtaining the Mataura seat in the Opposition interests was born in Bendigo (Victoria) in 1860, and so is 48 years of age. His parents, when he was of the early age of three years, were attracted by the "gold fever," anyi they immigrated to the Dominion diggings in 1863. After a primary school education Mr Anderson was apprenticed to the printing trade, and followed it in Oamaru, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Gore, where he has been ever since. It was 18 years ago that ,Mr Anderson turned his attention to journalism proper, taking an interest in the Mataura Eneign, of which he eventually became part proprietor, and when both Gore papers amalgamated he became a partner in the combined management. Although Mr Anderson has always taken a keen interest in political affairs this is his first attempt to gain Parliamentary honours. In August Mr Anderson successfully opposed Mr W. J. Marsh for the East Southland ward vacancy on the Southland Education Board, obtaining a victory by 167 votes to 147.
