WANGANUI CHORAL SOCIETY.

A successful start.

His Worship the Mayor presided over a meeting of about 60 ladies and gentlemen in tne Council Chambers last evening, held to consider the question of forming a Choral Society for Wanganui. Apologies tor absence were received from Mrs luackay, and Mr. C. W. Naylor.

His Woraaip, in hi 3 opening reiuarks, referred to the fact that i&r. J. G. Woon had worked the matter up, feeling with others, tliat it was tune that Vv anganui possessed such a society, as it did in years' gone by, and winch should xakc its place beside the Orcnestral Society. Mr. J. G. "Woon said he had been well supported in the idea, and hoped the outcome of tao meeting would be &atisiactory. Wanganui had formerly possesded a -very goou Choral Society which, however, died out. It was lelt high time to re-establish it. After a reference to the musical and social advantages of such a society, and a hope that the public would support it, Mr Woon moved a denes of rtrioiutions as under: —

"That in the opinion of this meeting ihe tune has arrived for the formation and establisainenu once more, of a Choral Society m Wanganui." — Seconded by Mra Ramsey and carried unanimously. "That the Society shall be called the Wanganui Choral Society." — Seconded by Mr. i<\ Webb-Jones and carried. N

'"That the objects of the Society shall be the practice, cultivation, and pioduction.in public ot choral works." — Seconded jy Mr j^eCaul and carried. -

"That the Society shall conskt of ac- ( tive md honorary members.' — Seconded jy Dr. iiatherly and carried. Dr Hatherly suggested the formation of a provisional committee to consider the best means of carrying into effect the wishes of the meetinK, and report to a future meeting. He moved accordingly — Seconded by Mr. B. Yates. — Mr L. Uouen drew attention to the necessity of finding out the forces available, and who .trould be available for the important posi-. tions, such as that of conductor. — Mr. Woon thought those questions could be settled later on. The object of the meeting was to give the Society a start, and details could be settled later on. They wanted to get all the names they could. — Mr Cohen moved, as an addition to the motion, that the committee should find out how many names would be available as active members, and who would be available for the position of conductor, and report to a subsequent meeting. — Dr. Hatherly accepted the addition. — Mr. Webb-Jones suggested that the committee should be empowered to draw up rules. A doubt had been expressed whether it would be possible to carry on the Society, out he thought that in time io would be be found quite possible to get sufficient male \oices, even though at first there might not be sufficient available. — Mr. V. Towsey, speaking as conductor of the Liedertafel, said he wouiu certainly make one to help the Choral Society as much as possible, and would ask his members 1 to do so. — The motion, in its amended form, was then put and jsaried. The following were elected a provisional committee: — Mesdames Ramsey, Greenwood, Jas. Watt, Hughes Johnston, Miss Richmond, Messrs- J. tr. Woon, L. Cohen, A. Towsey, Leslie Peck, B. jates F. Webb-Jones, and Dr. Hatheriy. It was resolved that the committee report to a meeting to be held in the same place on the evening of Thursday, 23rd inst. . .Mr. L. Cohen -moved a hearty-vote of thanks to Mr. J. Gr. Woon for the work he had done in interesting those present in the objects of the Society, and referred in eugolistic terms to what Mr. Woon had done towards its establishment. The motion was carried by acclamation, Mr Woon returning thanks, and expressing the hope that the Society would become a credit to Wanganui. The usual compliment to the chair concluded a highly successful meeting.
