Half-Holiday Question in Nelson

NELSON, April 8. A meeting of shopkeepers opposed to the Saturday half-holiday was held last night, when replies were received from the Minister of Labour, that no alteration in the day could be made till next year. After a long discussion, the following motion was carried by 18 to 28: — "That this meeting agrees that, owing to the Government refusing the request of the shopkeepers to alter the statutory half-holiday to Wednesday, a thorough canvass of the town should be made for signatures of shopkeepers willing to close on Wednesdays and onen on Saturdays, and if the majority agree to the alteration,, it will take place from April 22nd." The object of the resolution is to test the law on the subject.
