Stumping machines.

An . amendment to the Post Office Act has been 'introduced in the House of Representatives by the Government, to authdritfo the use of stamping machines. It provides that the Postmaster General may, on receiving such security as he thinks fit, cause or permit to be issued to any persoq recording machines for impressing upon postal packets and other documents the sign of postage values and recording the amount of such values. The impressions so made will be valid for the prepayment of postage and of charges on telegrams just as if stamps of the ordinary kind were used, and the amount will be collected at intervals. The machine may «Iso be used for stamping receipts. The penalty for fraudulently impressing a postal packet or receipt is a fine not exceeding .£IOO or imprisonment for any period up to a year.
