MR MASSEY IN THE NORTH.

(Per United Fr««a Atwacifttiea). AUCKLAND, June 11

Mr Massey addressed a meeting under the* auspices of the Huntly Political I'eform League laet. night. He said he wan glad to acknowledge that the Colonial Treasurer had a surplus. The country is prosperous and the revenue buoyant, but he remarked upon the indebtedness of the colony increasing at the rate of two- millions yearly though he did not see how this could be avoided. He urged that in the revision ot the tariff the Government should reduce the duties on the necessaries of life and so keep down the cost of living to the multitude. He was in favour of an amendment in local government law doing away with the dual control by County Councils and Road Boards, and placing the finance of local authorities on a more satisfactory basis. He also dealt with the Land Bill. A vote of thanks was carried with enthusiasm.
