WANGANUI CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL.

THE GREAT SCULLING MATCH.

Visitors to Wanganui during Christmas week will be afforded an opportunity of witnessing some most exciting sport of * . varied description. First and foremost there will be the big sculling match between James St anbury, the ex-champion of the world, and William Webb, N«nr Zealand's champion oarsman. This event alone will be sufficient to attract thousands of people to Wanganui from all parts, as it will be the greatest aquatio event in the history of New Zealand. This race is set down for decision on Boxing Day (Wednesday, 26th inst). As it will be rowed some eight mil«s up the river it will give country people an excellent opportunity of seeing some of the beauties of the Rhine of New Zealand, and do doubt many hundreds will take advantage of the occasiin to hold picnics, which should prove most enjoyable. In addition to the Stanbury-Webb race there will be some fine swimming sports provided, under the management of the Wanganui Imateur Swimming Club. These should be well worth witnessing, and will no doubt attract great interest. CONCERT IN THE EVENING. In the evening there will be a grand concert in the Opera House in aid of the Garrison Band. An excellent programme has been arranged, and a full house may be confidently anticipated. The fact that the stakes will be paid over during the interval to the winner of the sculling race should of itself attract a big crowd, quite apart from the praiseworthy object of the concert. AMATEUB ATHLETIC CLUBS SPOETS. On the Thursday the Wanganni Amateur Athletic Club's, will hold a Sports , meeting on Cook's Gardens, and the gath- ' ering promises to he one of the most successful of its kind ever held in Wan* ganui. The competitors will include many of the most noted amateur athletes in the Colony, whilst the cycling events should also be very- interesting. The sports will not start until 2 o'clock, and as along programme has to be got through the events will follow one another in quick succession. XMAS CARNIVAL ANT> SPORTS. The excellent nominations received for the Carnival Sports, which take place on the Friday is a sufficient guarantee that a capital afternoon's fun will be provided. The programme includes pedestrian, cycling, and chopping events, and there will not only be plenty of variety, but heaps of excitement for the spectators. Many of the most prominent cash runners will compete, whilst the cyclists will include irany of the best known, riders, and these events will be full of interest. Probably the chief entertainment will be caused by thG chopping competitions, in which not .- only the best axemen New Zea'and but * the cracks of Australia v.d Tasmania wiU take part. " . . It is satisfactory that many thousands of holiday-makers will elect to visit Wanganui for the occasion, and those who do come here should have good reason to be satisfied with the entertainment to Be set before them.
