ROWING.
NOTES BY "RUDDER."
Rowing men have had nothing to complain about as far as the weather is concerned for the last fortnight, the water being ideal night after night. A good deal of swimming has been indulged in, and it is now high time that the non-swimmers and coxswains were taken in band aud made to become acquainted with the knowledge of this most necessary art.
The crews engaged in the Fitzherbert Fours are doing good work, and though some at present are a bit on the ragged side, by the time the convincing day rolls round some very fair crews should line up.
News from Christchurch states that the Avon Rowing Club promises to be very strong this season, tlieir crews seeming to be a good deal ahead of those which havo represented the club for some time past. It may also interest a local youths' crew to kuow tliat the Canterbury R.C. youths' crew will be the same as that which represented the club at Picton last year, with the exception that Fitzer replaces Parson in the bow seat.
It is reported that Aramoho will have a good maiden crew this season. I hope this is so, as the shed has been out of luck for some season's past.
W.R.C. FITZHERERT FOURS.
Purser is moving along fairly well. Row, who is a promising young oarsman, should be watched, having developed a tendency to shoot his slide.
Till is swinging along nicely, though bow could improve matters by swinging the body further forward. Dodgshun's crew are fairly well together, though No. 3 end bow are inclined to break time.
Bailey is dashing his men along, and brings them in very tired. A nice, crisp stroke is set for this crew, who seem to find it too quick through the water. No. 3 would find it easier by not rolling in the boat so much. This promises to be a good combination, however.
Marshall's crew failed to impress me in any way. The body swing is very ragged indeed, • and keeping time is not thought of. No. 3 is the responsible man for this. There is some very good material in this crew if it were coached properly. Bell and McDonald are both going in fair style, though the latter crew is rather ragged in places.
It has been mentioned to me that Mr W. S. Dustin has very kindly presented this club with a challenge shield. If this is so I hope that members will show tlieir appreciation of the donor's kindly action by rewarding him with a large nomination.
Members are reminded that entries for the next set of fours will be received up till Saturday night. This event will be rowed over the mile and a half course. I hope to see a good entry, as this is the first mile and a half race the club has had for some seasons.
