THE AWARUA FORESTS.

Proposal to ,op*tv up by Tram '-• -ljwe.-., ; , / (From Our Fartfafnentary Special.) (By Telegraph.) WELLKHG^ON, October 20. Last evening- th.^ l member f^r Rangitikei, Mr Remington, introduced to tho Minister of Lands '4 deputation consisting of Messrs O. McGregor and^p.' Gardiner; 1 who urged that a good' serviceable bush "vorse tram line shßuld be laid with light iron rails froiti TJ¥Mi t6 r tap the Government milling ■''timber' 'forests in'Awarua 18. Block. Originally a proposal had been put forward «for A steam tramcar, but this scheme has since been considered too costly. When the matter was previously under the Rangitikei County Council was chiefly concernled in devising some scheme whereby the I heavy traffic might be kept off the county roads, but as an Appeal Court case had resulted in favour ol the Council it is now practically in the hands of that body to stop timber traffic altogether on its roads. ' Nevertheless, it .was pointed out .by the deputation' that the Council recognises the ' importance of the Government being able to dispose of the valuable milling timbers on the Awafua Block, and is prepared to undertake the construction of the tram if placed in a financial position to do so. * The royalties tti&t would accrue to the Government on the Awarua timbers are estimated approximately at .£2,400 if suitable facilities are provided for bringing the timber to market. The Council's snare of the royalties , would be one half, and it was pointed put that if these could be capitalised by the Goverment up to say .£IO,OOO, and the money handed over to tho Council the work of putting down the line 1 could probably be undertaken for that sura. Comprehensively summarised that is what the position put before the Minister amounted to. Mr Remington said the proposal was approved by the residents of Torere, Utiku and Moawhango. It was the only .way of tapping the huge Waimarino forests estimated to contain 32,000,000 feet of timber. After Messrs. McGregor and Gardiner had spoken Mr McNab said he could not „do anything until he had visited the lo* cality, nor could be make a recommendation to th© Cabinel.. He promised to visit Utiku about November 14th or 15th/ and ascertain personally what was requir- < pd. The matter could not be dealt with I until tho next Estimates wore being con* ; sidcred. The whole matter had been be- \ fore Ministers on previous- occasions, and j Mr McNab again took the opportunity to state that the work might be put in bend 'at an early date if tliJe local authorities* and others interested made arrangements with some financial institution.
