SPORTING.
NOTES BY "ACHILLES." The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club made a profit of about ,£430 on their spring meeting. Grafton Loch, the winner of th© Juvenile Plate at Dunedin last Wednesday, is spoken of a slashing fine colt that may develop into a racehorse of the highest class. He was sired by Grafton out of Loch Lotta. Major Loder appears to be in a very fair way to once again claim a classic winner next season. Galvani, a two-year-old colt by Laveno, has been carrying the colours of the Irish sportsman with much distinction, his latest success being gained in the Imperial Produce Stakes at Kempton Park last week. Laveno, the sire ot (jalvani, is a son of Bend Or. D. Sulivan, who had the mount on Asteroid at the Park last Thursday, had i.is arm broken when the mare iell with him in the hurdle race. Wirial (the three-year-old son of Birkenhead — Nixie) showed a good display ot temper at the start of the Park Stakes Handicap at Hastings last Wednesday. Though accompanied by an escort on a staunch horse for ttie purpose of restraining him, he broke away and galloped over a mile and a quarter before D. Price, his rider, could get him under command. After an interval of some minutes he was again got to the post, where he commenced standing on his hind legs and lashing out. On one occasion he jumped right across the stable horse that was with him, knocking the rider of the animal and his own jockey both oflF their respective mounts. Wirral was again mounted, but, just as the word "go" was given, he started again, lost his rider, and turned round the wrong way. He was favourite on the machine, .£296 being invested on his chance. News of the easy victory of Solution over Lady Wallace in the Craven Plate at Randwick yesterday was received with no end of surprise in Melbourne, says the Argus. It was thought here that the race might be a close one, but Lady Wallace was generally tipped as the winner. Such a hollow victory over a mare of the class of Lady Wallace was undreamt of, more especially as the Australian mare had been resting since her race on Saturday, while Solution had run in the Metropolitan on Monday. Solution's race in chat event evidently took nothing out of her; on the contrary, it appears to have sharpened her up. The victories of the New Zealand horses at this and the last A.J.C. Spring Meeting (not to mention other numerous successes) go to prove that the all-round form in New Zealand ia somewhat better than in Austria. Solution was really only a moderate performer before coming to Australia, but her excellence must have been well known before .Jier owner ventured on the trip. We have had a few bad animals from New Zealand, but there can be no doubt it is a great country for breeding racehorses, and Soult and Multiform arc two great sires.
