UNITY LODGE, NO. 76, 1.0. G.T.

The weekly meeting of Unity Lodge held on Monday evening was again well attended by the members, and a large amount of routine business was put through. Two candidates were proposed for membership and were during the evening initiated into the Order. Bro. Efford, P.G.C.T., and Sister Efford, from Christchurch, Bro. Maunder from New Plymouth, and Bro. Hutchens from Woodville, were present, and were received officially. On the invitation of the C.T., Bro. Efford took the chair and conducted the initiation. At the conclusion of the business each of the visitors addressed the lodge at some length. Bro. Maunder spoke of the need of education on the temperance question, especially among the children. He advised the members to study all they could on the subject themselves, and so be able to refute any arguments that might be put forth against the principles of prohibition. Bro. Efford reviewed the progress that temperance had made in New Zealand since his arrival in the colony and also followed up the first speakers remarks about the desirability of being well posted up on the subject. Bro. Hutchens based his remarks on the causes of splits and dissensions in lodges, and advised members to beware of them. Altogether a very instructive meeting was held, and the members went home feeling that it had been one of the best for a long time. A very hearty vote of thanks was extended to the visitors, and after greetings had been received from sister lodges, the meeting closed. Good Templary in Wanganui is believed to be on the increase, and the members hope to be able to give a good account of their work when the time for the next general election cornea round.
