Damage Four Million Sterling

HONGKONG, September 20. It is now stated that the Phoenix is a total wreck.

The total damage done by the typhoon is estimated at four millions sterling, and it is believed that fully 5000 Chinese have perished. The steamer Heungshan, from Macao, with 1700 Chinese passengers aboard, was blown ashore at Lantao Island. All the Europeans on the vessel were saved, but numbers of the Chinese were drowned despito heroic attempts at rescue.

A later Admiralty message states that H.M\S. Phoenix was not wrecked but damaged hopelessly.
