COURTS AND OFFENCES.
(Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHUK'CH, October 31. At the Magistrate's Court, to-day, Barney Eyan was fined ,£lO for betting in a public place. Evidence was given to show that the accused was calling the odds on the Warnambool-Melbourne Road Eace in High Street, but 'that, although ho took money, he refused to pay beta. Mr V. S. Day, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning heard a number of informations laid' against bookmakers by ' the Canterbury Jockey Club and trustees of the Christchurch Eacccourse for trespassing on August 15th, 17th, and 19th. The following fines wore inflicted: — Eric Bradshaw, .£3O (three charges), E. Williams, .£2O (two charges), G. Pearce, £\ 5 (two charges), J. .£5, J. Cuthbertson, .£ls (two charges), W. Pollock, dfis ; S. H. Brierly, ,£ls (two charges) ; H. Howe, £5, F. Clarke, £10; A. Grover (three charges), £; W. Stollen, £5; S. Barton, £5; .J. Laiichlan. ,£2O (two charg-cc); and W. Langley, .£5. Charges against J. 'Paii-bairn, T. Johnson, M. Barnett, andjP. Grant were dismissed. Further cases of trespassing will be heard to-morrow niorning. FEILDING. October 31. -Joseph Thompson and William Ramsay, on remand on a' charge of burglary at Domigan's, were committed for trial at Palmerston. On a further charge of breaking and entering the promises of Wcightman and an attempt to committ a crime. Thompson was committed for trial and Ramsay was acquitted.
