A Question of Costs.
INVERCARGILL. May 18. To-day the Southland County sued the Winton. Borough for its share of the licensing expenses of the Awarua district, which the defendant body refused to pay until the amount set forth in the certificate of the Chairman of the Licensing Committee for members' expenses in attending meetings waa reduced to the actual cost of travelling. It appeared that a few years back the total expenses ran from a, pound or two to nil, but amounted to .£24 this year. The former Stipendiary Magistrate (who was at Winton on Court business anyway) did not charge expenses, but Mr McCarthy, S.M., as chairman of the committee, had received a guinea and several members one pound, and those living within three miles from Winton ten shillings per sitting. Mr Cruickshank, S.M. (Gore) was on the bench, Magistrate Riddell being interested. He doubted whether he had power to deal with the certificate made by his brother Magistrate, and took time to consider the question.
