NELSON, September 22. Heavy rain to-day caused a flood in the low-lying portions of the • town. Some storm water pipes and culverts burst and water entered ,the basements of shops and hotels. In Hardy Street and the vicinity of the railway station considerable damage .was done. The schools closed for the day, as the children were unable to travel through almost waist-deep water. The flood is now abating.
