ASSAULT CASE"

A. J. Rende.ll was charged at the Police Court this morning, before Mr C. C. Kettle, S.M., with assaulting Constable Campbell in the execution of hi» duty. Accused, who was undefended, pleaded "not guilty." Constable Campbell stated that at 8.30 this morning he went to accused's house to arrest him on a warrant for disobeying an order of the Court. Waited for some minutes for accused, who then came along quietly until opposite Simpson's stables, where he (accused) said that he would like to k go in and have another go at Simpson. However, accused proceeded along alright until reaching the Police Station gate, where- he said he would not go in, and made a grab at the constable's throat, assistance having to be got to get accused into the station. He fought hard, and said ho did not care if ho got ten years. Accused said he did not care for the law, and would like to meet Mr Kenny, and he would give him "what for." Accused was perfectly sober. * > % . ' i •", > In answer to accused, Constable Campbell said that he had not threatened .to "make it hot for him," or to "get him thr«U or four months extra." In answer to tho question as to whether lie wished to give evidence on his own belialf, accused said he did not wish to -go into the box, which caused Mr Kettle to remark that he was very wise. After hearing the evidence of Constable Fitzpatrick, Mr Kettle said that there was no question of the offence. He was loth to send. such a young man ., to prison, and .would 'fine him 20a, in ,defMlt 24 hours.,
