There was a large attendance of members and visitors at the- jueeting last evening of the Baptist Young men's Society. The subject tor the evening, was, a "Medical Talk" by Dr InneS.' * The Doctor chose as his subject one that has been very much before the public of late— that of .'"Vaccination." The lecture was listened to with a great deal of interest, and at the conclusion a number of questions were asked, arid considerable discussion took place. Mr G. Carson (vice-president), on behalf of the Society, moved,,^hat Dr* Innes* be accorded a vory hearty vote of thanks for his able address. This was seconded by •Mr H. Purser, and e&f'ried heartily. The next meeting of the Society will be held on June 16, which Will • be "Elocution Night." .. ,
The third meeting of the Christ Church Club Debating Society took place last evening, there being , a good attendance.' The Rev T. B. Maclean acted as Speaker. •In the absence of the Premier (Mr A. Mountfort), the Minister for Customs (Mr A. G. Cummins), in a neat speech, introduced the Government- measure, which was to the effect. that- no" /person should be allowed to land in NewmZealand unless worth i>loo. . The motion gave rise to an interesting and. animated discussion; Mr W. H. McCaul leading the Opposition. The following also spoke': — .Messrs C. Maclean (Minister for the Interior), Williams (Minister for Railways), G% Pownall (Nelson), Gardiner > (New Plymouth), Dymock # (Brunswick),- Campbell (Upokongaro), " Mountfort (Christeirureh), ■ ■ Edwards (Thames), Andrews (.Eastown), 'Htttherly (London), Peat (Kaitake), and. others. The debate resulted in >tihefcdefeat of the Government by one votcrfi The next- meeting of the Society . will};'takc place on Thursday, June 18, when a- Ministry under Mr W. McCaul as'Prem'ior will- take office.
