Thifi afternoon the Chief Justice and a jxiry of 12 commenced' the hearing of an action in which James Dennett Eought to recover J2301 ( damages from William Thomson .for alleger slander. Defendant is minister of Scots Church, Wellington, an independent organisation, and was formerly %iinistqr in the Presbyterian Church. Plaintiff .is a builder," and was at one 1 time superintendent in the Sunday Schol connected, with defendant's church. It was stated that plaintiff became engaged to « female ' teacher in the Sunday ESchool in August. Defendant was alleged to have qought to break off the engage-, meht, made a statement that the plaintiff assaulted a little arirl. The defence was a denial that the w^rds were spoken: that if they were iised they had been uttered by the defendant in the lt^ipßt b°lief of their truth. The en«p partly heard when the court ro°?
