THE BOROUGH AND THE PLUMBERS

TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — I should not have troubled to write had it not been for the four silly and illogical letters appearing in this morning 8 paper, all apparently written with the object of detracting attention from the main point at issue, viz., "Who are going to be injured, and who benefited by the Mayor's proposal"? The Council say they intend to make it financially possible for every working man's house in the Borough to have up-to-date sanitary conveniences, by supplying the material, labour, and doing everything in connection with the same at actual cost, and when the owners cannot pay the whole amount at once, to accept payment in instalments. Who will benefit by this? Why the whole community, individually and collectively. And who will lose anything? Why four or five master plumbers only. Will the journeyman lose anything? Certainly not, on the contrary, more work will be promoted by the Council's inducements to householders to have up-to-date conveniences. The proposal is one for the betterment of the health conditions of the town, and 'the Council must consider the health of the inhabitants before any other consideration. Instead of abusing the Mayor, he should be applauded for bringing forward innovations such as this which, although objectionable necessarily to a very few, are of great importance to many. Despite anything that may be written the members of the Council will, lam sure (with perhaps the exception of one or two interested) vote for the sanitary plumbing of the town, in the future, being done by the Corporation. — I am, RATEPAYER.
