A SHOOTING AFFRAY.
A Ship's Chief* Officer Arrested The New Zealand Times' Auckland correspondent states that news has been received from Kennedy Bay, on the cast coast of the Coromandel -Peninsula, that Buries, the boatswain of "the brigantino. Senorita, was shot dead yesterday: The police, doctor, and coroner accordingly proceeded to-day to the sc;ne of the fatality, and further particulars' now to hand leave, the circumstances of the fatality very much in doubt. As a result of the coroner's inquest, Sidney George Simons, mate of the vessel, has been arrested, and removed to Coromandel. At the inquest evidence waft "given showing that -Buries and Symons were shooting .at seabirdi with a revolver from the deck of the vessel, when, from some cause not at present disclosed, a bullet struck Buries, and caused injuries to which he subsequently succumbed. Who fired the shot is not stated in the report now to hand. Dr Checscman stated that he made a postmortem, and discovered a bullet in the body of deceased. The jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death by- a revolver bullet, but there was no evidence to show who fired the shot. Symons was arrested on a charge preferred against him. Deceased was a married man, 46 years of ago. His wife and family reside in Sydney. CPer United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November t 25. . At the inquest to-day, Captain James Farrell said he heard a shot, and went from 'his cabin to the poop *> see what the shooting was about. The deceased told him .he was firing at some birds. The captain went back to the cabin, leaving the mate and deceased together. Shortly afterwards he heard a second shot, "My God, I have shot the boatswain; come ou deck and look." He found Buries lying on deck. He asked him what was the matter. The deceased aiJswered, "I am -done- for." These were the only words he spoke.. Buries died within an hour. Dr Cheeseman made a post-mortem examination, and found that a bullet dad entered .the right side, cutting through the entrails and arteries, and lodging in the skin on the left side. The jury returned the following verdict, "That deceased met his death by a, revolver bullet wound on the Senorita on tbe 24th instant, but there was no evidence to show who fired tbe shot." Constable Shaw arrested the mate, Sidney G. Symons. November 26. • In connection with the shooting affair at Kennedy Bay, Sidney Geo, Symons, mate of the barquentiue/Senorite., was brought before the Court this morning, and remanded for eight days, bail- being allowed iv two sureties of JEISO, and his own bond of .£250.
