E. D. SMITH IMPRISONED FOR 24 YEARS.
Edward Drummond Smith, convicted yesterday on a charge of arson,* was brought up for sentence. , Asked if ha had anything to say why sentence should not be passed upon him. Mr Treadwell addressed the Court on his behalf, stating that the prisoner 'was- practically penniless, and had a wife and child absolutely penniless.. It was asked, under the circumstances,
that the provisions of, -the Probation j Act might be extended. If such request could not be granted, it was asked that j the most lenient sentence might be { passed. ' His Honor, addressing the. prisoner, , •aid he could not grant probation, be- ! cause it seemed tjat the matter had ! been planned. However, as the Pro- j bation Officer's report* was favourable, I he would deal leniently with^him and ! treat, it as a first offence, in the hopes tfiat it would be a lesson to\him ana a warning to others. The sentence of the Court would be that the prisoner be kept to hard labour in His Majesty's prison in Wanganui for two and a half years.
