SENIOR CUP.
PIRATES, v WAVERLEY.
This game was played on Cook's Gardens, which was in good condition, with the exception that the grass was rather long in places. The" Pirat«3 were fully represented. The Waverley; team looked a fine strapping lot, and includ- ' cd Elmslie, who has just returned from South Africa. McGregor set the leather rolling for tho Pirat«s, and the ball, was returned to the half-way flag. The Pirate- forwards, with a fine rash, carried the oval to near the '•Waverley line, but' the full-back- saved .'and .tha WaverleV forwards took the boll 1 - .along merrily to the Pirate 25's"; .but Btaid releiVW to the centre. Peace: put in' a -nice run tfhd was grassed by Braid. A nice 'kick, by Price saw play on 'the Waverley side of the half-way for -aV v while, but Burke, with a lucky kick:, sent the leather out in Pirate's territory^ The latter* forwards, however, with' a. fine rush, cleared the line and ■ carried 'the leather right down the field and b'ver the line, . but, unfortunately for them, the£ ]ost control of the boll and Waverley. .were, forced. Givo and take play followed for the rest of the spell, which endedwithout -any score. Shortly after., the; start of the 'second spell, the Pirjates' had m shot at.gjoaj froW half-way, but nothing came Top it and Waverley were forced. The Pirate forwards, headed by McGonagle, soon had the leather "near the -Waverley 'line, and a nice piece of passing by McGregor, Coe and Price," ended in the latter scoring. The" attempt »t goal 'was futile: The Pirates again attacked after- the kick out,,.juid McGregor had a shot at goal from a' mark bnt the attempt was a very* poor one. Give and take play followed, and play was confined to near the centre ' lor some time. Eventually the Pirates, with a nice passing. rush, had Waverley , defending near their line, but Jackson °' Byjies, with a capital run, carried: the leather to past the centre and a goqd rush by Waverley forwards saw play for a minute or two inaidc Pirttte'2s's. The tatter's forward*, however, brought relief by % capital dribbling rush, and' Waverley wen , 'again defending. A pretty piece of passing by Braid; Me- ' Gregor, and Price should have ended in a score had the 'latter, passed out to Teko, instead of trying to beat too •many men. A free kick to the Pirates r "' saw Coe kick a fine goal, and shortly after the whistle sounded "no, side,, having the Piratea victorious by 6 points to nil. The game was a verj uninteresting one, then being far ..too man- •crum* and too much touch-line play, bnt, of course, this was unavoidable owing to. tha wind. The best team undoubtedly ' won on the day's play. The: Waverley backs are decidedly weak. Jackson Symes played in' tho time-quarter line. in the second bout, and with » little practice in that position, should develop into a very fair' player. He runs very strong, and is a very difficult man to stop when t he, properly get* going. Mr Weekes refereed to the satisfaction of both Wants. • ;
