LANDS FOR THE PEOPLE.
(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 19. A ballot for Crown lands, opened up , for settlement in the King Country, is proceeding to-day. In all 907 applications have been received for 54 sections, 23 being unapplied for, while for some of the lots as many as 60 applications have been received. A number of applicants came from the South. Most of the lota unapplied for will be. taken up by the unsuccessful ones at tho ballot. The ballot is conducted by the Commissioner of Crown Lands. The room is crowded with applicants. Tho Premier and Miss Seddon and the Hon. W. Jennings, M.L.C., were present during the morning. Several successful ones expressed their gratification to Mr Seddon for throwing the lands open, and were in turn congratulated by tho Premier on their success. Mr Seddon promised those present that he would construct roads to open up the Kawliia district, so that all might be able to reach the markets. Ballots for several of the lots were drawn by Miss Seddon.
