WANGANUI'S SPECIAL CONTINGENT.

I In- -\l vyni 111 iiionni't; lecen'eil llii liill<i»iii^ ■•pldiiliil j),ititi)li( i.ffei hum l.'u'illt f\lljl,ltlick Mlll]l>>t)ll, JUII., llllilI'liille — 1 ollu liiynelJt, my own lioiae, mid X2O in cash to equip myself." 'Ihe M.vyor this morning waited upon -Ur Buxton, of the Railway Department, and also on Mr J. F. M'Beth, chief postmaster, and urged that the railway employees subscriptions to the Patriotic Piiml, and those of the Post and Telegraph Department should go to the local Patiiotic Special Contingent Fund. The Mayor explained that when the above funds were inaugurated it was prior to the Premier's suggestion that Wangauui should equip its own Contingent, and it was but reasonable that the employees of the above departments should now ask that their subscriptions should join with the subscriptions of their fellow citizens in tho grand local patriotic effort. Wanganui is receiving applications from men from Palmerston to New Plymouth, and anyone within those limits may fairly reciprocate in assisting to equip them. Those having hoises to sell or donate arc requested to "Napi, napi," as the Maoris say. Tlie handsome donations by Mr Polsou 1 of ,£ls and ,£2O by the Hon. J. Bryce we have no doubt will be largely followed by their fellow settlers. Horses would bo even more acceptable than money. Mr Spriggens, the President of the Cosmopolitan Club, handed the Mayor this morning their first subscription of JJIOO, part from concert and part from funds of the Club. Mr Spriggene also handed the Mayor his own cheque for ,£IOO, in term^ of his challenge- on the platform last night to tho anonymous carping critics who had so unfairly, the Club considers, criticised their action. The offer is open to Monday night.
